Outside Magazine: Ford

This was a nice surprise…..it was great seeing the images I shot with Outside TV in Outside Magazine used by Ford to help promote their all new 2020 Ford Explorer. These spreads were shot over a period of 4 months in 4 different locations. Crested Butte, Colorado with Eric Larsen, Long Beach, New York with Will Skudin, we shot in the Majove Desert in California with Mike Escamilla, and also Telluride, Colorado with Hilaree Nelson.

These modern day explorers were really cool to work with and the overall mixture of images ended up being pretty sick. As always I try my best to carry themes through these shoots, and the portraits in front of the cars using my Petzval lens ended up making the final cut, which made me super proud since I know the footage the boys got, and it was nothing short of amazing. So it was pretty cool to see the way the editors used the stills and make video out of them : )

(PLEASE NOTE: The first and last spreads here; the bottom right corner image is not taken by me. The polar image, and the surfing image)

GMC; Elevating Adventure

This was my first great shoot in months with Outside TV. The last two shoots I had been pretty sick with breathing problems, and some sort of cold/ flu thing, so showing up to this shoot feeling great was a nice break for me. While I still have not kicked my cough or its been pretty just kinda hanging out for months, I felt near 100% and it was so nice.

As soon as my plane was landing I could tell Tuscan, Arizona was a beautiful place. As we drove in I was amazed, and it was really a cool type of climate. While I was shooting, I even kept noticing how beautiful the environment was and the lighting and weather really helped make some of these shots come together.

I could have stayed there for a few weeks shooting, and I wish I was able to do that, because I would have. It was epic, and the shots kept on coming. Loved my visit to Tuscan, Arizona.

Florida is such a cool state to visit and shoot at. It’s always full of surprises and afternoon thunderstorms. Coming from Colorado I am use to shooting in weather, but Florida really is a wild card. Those storms can drop so much rain it can even stop us for a bit.

Shooting in Panama City, Florida was really cool, and the town was super small and cute. The homes were beautiful and the beaches were white sand and clean as can be. It was really great shooting in locations like these and the final images came out really nice.

I have spent many years living in California, but I’d never been to Mammoth Lakes, California. It was beautiful. I flew right into Mammoth, and for the whole shoot, I never really felt like I was in Cali. It was odd to me, but I just loved it out there.

It was one of the toughest shoots in my life, in the fact from the second I arrived the crew was sick, and it took me about 24 hours before I was feeling like crap. It made everything so difficult, for everyone, and it seemed as though I could not get warm for days, even though I was wearing a full coat with layers under, a hat and gloves…..nothing seemed to warm me up and i was having such a hard time breathing. It was very odd, but we all worked right through it, and crushed another shoot and GMC was pretty happy with my images.

Stoked- Kentucky

So this was a pretty crazy few weeks with Outside TV. First it was my first time in Kentucky and second we showed up during one of the biggest heat waves in recent memory. It was tough shooting, but I really fell in love with Kentucky. I personally have zero ties to Kentucky, but after spending a few weeks out there and meeting lots of wonderful folks, I could see myself living out there. It’s my type of people. My type of environment.

The theme of this shoot was going from place to place with Chef Adam Glick and doing some adventures, and a touch of cooking with the locals of Kentucky. We had adventures from Caves, to Zip Lining, Distilleries, to Dirt Biking. We did so many things packed into a few short days.

2020 Ford Explorer; Hilaree Nelson

This Outside TV shoot really stood out to me as one of my favorites of all time. First of all we shot in the beautiful town of Telluride, Colorado. It was my first time there, and now I know why my friends all rant and rave about Telluride.

Hilary Nelson is The North Face’s Athletes Team Captain. When I first found out about this, it did surprise me a bit. While I pay attention to the Outdoor sports, I have to admit I don’t follow them as closely as many people. As most of you all know I am passionate about art…that’s where a majority of my time is spent, but I know so many of The North Face athletes and at the time, I had not heard Hilaree’s story yet.

I say yet, because it’s one I won’t ever forget. She was the first woman in the world to link two 8000m peaks, Everest and Lhotse, in one 24 hour push. She also has dozens of first descents. In the fall of 2018 she linked turns down Lhotse becoming the first person to ski the down one of the most prized un-skiied lines in the world.

I got the privilege of hanging with Hilaree for a few days while she was biking, climbing, hiking and even being a mom. It was a great time and I’m so happy with the final images. Take a look below for a few extra shots from the shoot.

2020 Ford Explorer; Will Skudin

This was a great shoot for me for so many reasons. First of all it was great gathering with the Outside TV crew and seeing all of our friends over at Ford again, and this shoot was in New York! I was totally pumped for this and everything went so well. Will Skudin is a pro big wave surfer, and when I say big waves, think the biggest you've ever seen, and thats what this dude enjoys riding. It’s nuts, but fortunately for us we did not have to witness him throw his life on the line to ride a wave, the swells out in New York that week were pretty weak. That’s not to say there were no waves, because there were, just not 40 footers : )

So Will and his family run a well know surf camp during the summer out in New York. It serves hundreds of kids surfing thousands of waves. It was really great getting to meet Will’s family and getting to hang out during the surf camp. It made me miss my little ones, and wish they were out surfing with us.

Anyway the shoot was a great success.

2020 Ford Explorer; Eric Larsen

There is always something sweet about shooting near home, or at least terrain where I feel at home. Crested Butte is one of those places to me. I’ve been there quite a few times in my life, and this was awesome to shoot with Outside TV and Ford in my home state.

Eric is know for his polar expeditions and he spends much of his time in the arctic exploring around. His website and Instagram are pretty epic and his shots are kinda out of this world. Not surprising since most of us have never even seen those sort of environments. Anyway we got to hang with Eric and his family and do a bunch of local adventures.

From biking, hiking to even some boating, it was a really nice week up there in Crested Butte, Colorado. Take a look at some of the images I shot below : )

2020 Ford Explorer; Mike Escamilla

You know that feeling when you’re around someone who has one of those personalities who can excited the entire group of folks? That’s Mike Escamilla. From the second our whole Outside TV crew was meeting up at Mike’s house, you could tell he was a great human. He had that infectious attitude of positiveness that really flowed to the whole crew.

Mike is a pro biker, Hollywood Stuntman, Father and so much more. I had the privilege of getting to spend a few days with him and his daughter doing so many activities. We went biking, hiking, exploring, and even went camping in teepees. Yes, you read that right. Teepees. It was a first for me, and was pretty epic.

We spent a lot of time shooting in the Majove desert, and then made our way to Magical Nipton, California. Pretty wild town if you’re ever looking to drive a couple hours outside Vegas. Take a quick look below at some of my favs from our shoot with Mike and Ford.

2020 Chevy Silverado; Generation Strong

Marshall Miller

To say this was anything short of an epic shoot with Outside TV would be silly. It was so intense it was insane. Helicopters, wing suits, paragliding, BASE jumping, and I know i’m forgetting some of it. Marshall Miller and company put on a hell of a show, and it was an honor being able to witness a few days of fun to them. Wow. It was so fun playing in the Grand Canyon with Chevy and the boys……It will be a week I won’t ever forget.

CJ Hobgood is as great in person as he is a surfer. To say I was pumped to work with CJ and his Brother Damien, is an understatement. Ive shot CJ before but it was nearly a decade ago, and I was covering a Surfer tournament for AOL. How times have changed….but this Part of the Chevy Shoot was taken in Florida and we ran into some crazy storms and weather, it made shooting pretty rough, but it was so worth it. It was wonderful meeting CJ and his family who were all so kind. I finally got to get a shot of someone shaping a surf board, and its a pretty special guy too. Im pretty pumped about it!
